HUNDEN: "Last two years were pretty rough for me"

Our next interview from ROG Masters EMEA Finals is with Danish veteran Nicolai "HUNDEN" Petersen, with whom we sat down following his team's elimination.

Nicolai "HUNDEN" Petersen's new team were sent packing after playing just two maps against MOUZ, who picked up 16-10 and 16-5 victories on Cobblestone and Train, respectively.

HUNDEN has been enjoying his time in Germany

After the match, we sat down with the 26-year-old and quizzed him on his experience with ALTERNATE aTTaX so far, their ingame communication, and the current state of the Danish and the German scenes.

What were your expectations coming into this tournament?

It was a rough start, we got mousesports in the first match. We have been working a lot lately on our strats and on how we want to play the game. But yet again, we were playing against mousesports, a top 20 team in the world. Although it was hard, I think we proved a lot, especially on the first map. But then again, yes, it was hard but I think that we got a good result, although Train was a bit off.

How have you been practicing lately?

We have been playing for around three weeks now. None of us has ever tried to play in English before, so it is pretty rough. In the beginning, we were losing a lot, I think we have only one victory on HLTV right now. And I also think that our practice is going well, but we just need that extra thing to get some victories.

What are your thoughts on this new experience? ?

The team is really awesome, and so is the management behind it, I really like to be here. The English communication is just a smaller problem.

Do you think your communication issues can be fixed?

I think we can improve our communication a lot. This week, we worked a lot on that, it is still a big problem in some crucial rounds, but I think that we are learning fast. We really want to learn how to play in English, and this is just the beginning for our team.

Do you consider that these issues influenced your result on Train?

Not really, we did some stupid mistakes, but I do not think it was down to our communication. We just forgot how to play as a team during a big part of the game, I do not think that English was the main problem in that match.

You have played a key role in the development of many Danish players. Coming into a German team, are you aiming to do the same?

Of course that I want to find some new talents, and I think that we have some on our team – Lukas "ecfN" Kauer, for example, he is a new guy in the scene. I want to play with young talents, I want to show them how to play, how I want to play the game, and develop new talents who can go on to join even bigger teams. But we will also be a bigger team further down the road, I think.

When you joined ALTERNATE aTTaX, in your statement you seemed a bit frustrated with the Danish scene. Can you talk about that?

Yes, I think the last two years were pretty rough for me. After I left SK in 2015, I created default, and SK picked up some of my best players, such as k0nfig. Afterwards, I saw gla1ve join Heroic, then on Tricked I also saw es3tag be picked up by Heroic… This story is pretty rough for me. Every time that we reached a higher level, beating teams such as Heroic – I think we beat them two times –, all my best players would be picked up by Heroic or some other organisation.

Does that mean that if you were to to face a Danish team, your desire to win would increase?

I think I have some new rivalries here in Germany. We want to beat EURONICS, we want to beat BIG as well. This is because my teammates really want to beat them, and they don't feel the same when we are playing against Danish teams, although we haven't played against many Danes.

We recently lost against North Academy with b0RUP, my old teammate. It was a bit rough for me, but it was not that rough because here, on ALTERNATE aTTaX, our main goal is to beat the German teams, not the Danish squads, so that is also my own goal.

What do you think of the German scene?

I have not played many matches against German teams yet, but I think that it is improving. The level in ESL Meisterschaft is getting higher and higher, they have some good teams in there – like EURONICS and DIVIZON –, and, although all of these teams are good on paper, I am not sure of how good they are when playing matches.
